U.S. – China Climate Announcement
On November 12, the U.S. and China released a groundbreaking announcement to set ambitious goals for climate action and carbon pollution reductions. President Obama has made a pledge for 2025 that keeps the United States on track to cut its carbon pollution 80 percent by 2050 and setting a high bar for future administrations. And for the first time ever, China committed to peak its carbon emissions by 2030 at the latest.
Michael Brune, Sierra Club Executive Director, released the following statement in response:
The Sierra Club applauds President Obama and President Xi for setting ambitious goals to reduce dangerous carbon pollution and tackle the climate crisis.
China's new goal of producing 20 percent of its power from clean energy by 2030 is a huge step forward that signals a historic shift away from dirty fossil fuels and could drive a new global competition for clean energy technology.
By setting their sights high, the U.S. and China are showing that they are serious about taking action on the climate crisis, and that together, the international community can beat back climate disruption.
Working with Sierra Club’s International program, The Sierra Club Foundation is making targeted grants to partner organizations in countries that confront coal pollution and climate change. We support empowering grassroots activists in other countries by providing expertise and training related to coal and reforming international financial institutions to encourage more clean energy funding.
