In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, a global uprising against systemic racism and state-sponsored violence, and a climate crisis that continues to intensify, reflecting on what we accomplished in 2019 and the work that remains unfinished is both hope-inspiring and daunting. With a recalcitrant federal administration bent on rolling back the progress we have made on climate change and environmental protection, the Sierra Club Foundation continues to support people and programs that are making a difference despite the odds. Our 2019 Annual Report highlights work across the US that is fundamentally shifting our power systems – both the way we generate electricity to turn on the lights and the way we generate people power and momentum to make sweeping change.

With ten years left to transition to a clean energy economy and avoid the worst impacts of and irreparable damage from climate change, 2019 saw us leveraging all the tools we have at our disposal to build a more just, equitable, and sustainable future. From the Sierra Club programs that we fiscally sponsored and funded; to how we invested our assets consistent with our values and mission; to how we leveraged and supported partnerships that understand and act on the interconnections of social justice, public health, climate change, and clean energy solutions, the accomplishments and lessons learned in 2019 will endure and inform our work going forward.

Sierra Club Foundation’s 2019 Annual Report celebrates the people who wake up every day to create a more just, healthy future for all of us. All of this is possible because of those who believe in and stand with us in our work. We hope reading this year’s annual report will provide a bit of solace and uplift in these troubling times and inspiration for continuing the work ahead. Together, we are powering our future.
