The Sierra Club Foundation is at the forefront of catalyzing positive change, from our successful investments in energy justice projects to our efforts in strengthening the connection between people and nature, Our 2023 annual report highlights the profound impact of our collective efforts over the past year. 

Through our partnership with the Sierra Club, whose charitable programs are fiscally sponsored and funded by the Foundation, and through collaboration with strategic partner organizations that share our goals and values, communities across the country mobilized to take full advantage of the once-in-a-lifetime investments from the Inflation Reduction Act, accelerating the transition to a clean energy economy. Those investments are advancing clean energy projects, energy efficiency, climate-resilient infrastructure, and the deployment of public and private capital into underserved communities.  

2023 was a monumental year for land and water protection, with more than 12.5 million acres of land gaining new federal protections. From protecting city parks to national forests and partnering with Tribal leaders to preserve Native American cultural sites, our network of activists, partners, and supporters used creative advocacy, strategic communications, and litigation to fight for a sustainable future for all.

The Foundation’s Shifting Trillions initiative gained significant ground in transforming the energy finance system, including strategic engagement with several financial institutions that resulted in commitments from those institutions to shift capital towards achieving environmental justice goals. Our Catalytic Capital Portfolio and Movement Forward Fund continued investments in community organizations, projects, funds, and companies that are advancing climate solutions, social equity, and justice.

Our efforts over the next decade will be crucial if we are to avoid climate catastrophe. Your continued engagement and support are needed more than ever to help ensure all people and nature can flourish and thrive.
