Conservation and Outdoors Project

Protecting our country's wild places and the natural beauty, clean water, wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities they provide.

Our Wild America Campaign

Our Wild America is a leader in supporting efforts to create and protect national parks and monuments. These public lands sustain our cultural heritage, our trails and waterways, and our country’s famed scenic vistas. These natural resources serve not just as tokens of the past but as assets for nearby communities. Clean air and water, close access to recreation, and a safe place for kids to play are just a few reasons why national parks make great neighbors. Our Wild America seeks to share the benefits of our indispensable natural resources with all.

Beyond Dirty Fuels

As a special offshoot of the Our Wild America Campaign, the campaigners behind Beyond Dirty Fuels work hard to slow out-of-control development of coalfields, stop oil drilling in the Arctic, and prevent the expansion of fracking for natural gas. Pipelines, fracking, and drilling lie at a unique intersection between our public lands and energy work - doubly important in that victories protect our public lands and set a path toward a clean energy future. As oil companies, fossil fuel utilities, and outside interests increasingly lose business to renewable energy, Beyond Dirty Fuels ensures unnecessary pipelines and drilling projects don’t make it through the approval process.

Outdoors for All

Through local outings, conservation education, and leadership training, Outdoors for All programs ensure that each new generation stays in touch with nature and learns the importance of protecting it for the next generation. By supporting Sierra Club’s Outdoors for All, the Foundation is building a stronger, healthier, more inclusive environmental movement. Getting outdoors is good for all of us.

Inspiring Connections Outdoors Program

The Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) Program promotes appreciation for and protection of the natural environment, creating opportunities for personal development through outdoor adventures, leadership training, and environmental education for people who might not otherwise have the opportunity. 44 local Inspiring Connections Outdoors groups lead over 800 outings a year in cities across the country from San Jose, California to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. These groups cumulatively get 13,000 people outside each year.

Military Outdoors

Outdoors for All, through the Sierra Club’s Military Outdoors program, brings over 5,000 service members, veterans, and their family members outside every year. In addition to increasing physical activity, outdoor recreation can improve academic performance, reduce stress and anxiety, and even mitigate the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury in veterans returning from active service. Through partnership with The Great Outdoors Lab, a collaboration with REI and the University of California, Berkeley, Military Outdoors has helped document the biological and emotional effects of spending time outdoors.
