Sustainability Leader Joins TSCF Board of Directors
We are pleased to announce that Bill Weihl, Facebook’s Director of Sustainability and longtime corporate sustainability leader, has joined The Sierra Club Foundation’s Board of Directors.
"The Sierra Club is dedicated to promoting clean energy alternatives to dirty fuels like coal and oil, so its mission is exactly in line with my professional interests. I'm honored to support the work of such a successful and historic organization, said Bill. “Transitioning to a clean energy future is an urgent imperative if we are to solve the climate crisis. At Facebook, we have committed to 100% clean energy in our operations and I can’t think of a better organization to drive the systemic change that is needed economy-wide."
Prior to joining Facebook in 2012, Bill served for six years as Green Energy Czar at Google, leading energy efficiency and renewable energy efforts, including managing Google’s goal to become carbon neutral, founding the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, and heading the RE<C initiative to develop renewable energy less expensive than coal. Bill has previously served as professor of Computer Science at MIT for ten years, research scientist at Digital’s Systems Research Center for five years, and Chief Architect and then CTO at Akamai Technologies for five years. He was named one of Time Magazine’s Heroes of the Environment in 2009.
"As the fiscal sponsor of Sierra Club’s charitable programs, The Sierra Club Foundation must make informed, responsible grant-making and investment decisions that maximize social and financial return and support our mission," said Foundation Executive Director Peter Martin. "We are fortunate to have Bill on the Foundation board to bring both his keen business sense and his deep commitment to clean energy solutions as we spearhead the transition to 100% clean energy."
With such extensive experience in corporate sustainability and technology, Bill is a tremendous addition to our Board, and we are excited about the contributions he will make toward achieving the mission of The Sierra Club Foundation.
